Carl Filipiak has earned critical acclaim as one of today’s most dynamic jazz guitarists. Jazziz Magazine has included him among a renowned list of guitar players in their nominations for “New Fusion Blood,” and JazzTimes calls him “a dazzlingly versatile guitarist.”

Many of his recordings and performances have paired him with some of the industry’s finest musicians including Dennis Chambers, Victor Wooten, and Grammy nominee Bob Berg. His six independent recordings on Geometric Records have garnered him reviews in such prestigious publications as 20th Century Guitar, Billboard, Guitar Player, Guitar World, Jazziz and JazzTimes. Turner Broadcasting and NBC Sports have featured Carl’s music in several televised events including the Olympics.

His current group, Carl Filipiak and the Jimi Jazz Band, just released their third album “What Now” on Geometric Records. Featuring originals co-written by the band and a version of the Beatles “Strawberry Fields Forever”, their music brings the spirit of the sixties into the 21st Century.

Oral History Unveiling and Reception

In conjunction with Harford Community College’s 60th anniversary celebration, an Oral History Presentation and Reception will be held on Sunday, January 21, from 2 to 4 PM in the Chesapeake Center on the HCC campus.

Harford Community College will honor those who came from near and far to share their memories with Professor of History Dr. James Karmel for the College’s 60th Anniversary Oral History Project. Come hear their compelling stories of how the College has come to be where it is today and share in the vision of all that is yet to come.

A reception will follow the presentation where guests can mingle with the narrators of the College’s history and returning retirees, who will add to the treasure trove of College lore. Join in celebrating our past, present, and the journey that lies ahead!

The program, Simple Gifts, is a series of touching portrayals and poignant scenes from everyday life set to stunning music by such composers as Vivaldi, Strauss, Beethoven and Copland. Through a combination of virtuoso manipulation, beautiful music, theatrical illusion, and artistic insight, the original vignettes presented in Simple Gifts provide an entertaining and sensitive vision of what it is to be human. The performance explores a range of emotions with characters and actions that are amazingly convincing. The marionettes are engineering marvels and the quality of movement is extraordinary.

In the performance Life in Motion, Joseph Cashore presents his collection of marionette masterworks. Characters of depth, integrity, and humanity are portrayed in a full evening unlike anything else in theater today. Celebrate the arts at “The Winter Doldrums: A Sunday Afternoon of Music and Fine Art,” the annual Harford Community College music faculty concert and fine art faculty art and photography exhibition. The event will be held on Sunday, January 28, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Chesapeake Theater and Student Center on the HCC campus.

The HCC music faculty will perform in the Chesapeake Theater. After the concert, visit the Chesapeake Gallery in the Student Center and admire works created by HCC’s Visual, Performing and Applied Arts faculty who present an exhibit of paintings, sculpture, photographs, digital art, and ceramics. Their recent work, which includes a wide variety of media and conceptual ideas, is truly a highlight of our exhibition season. There will be a reception with light refreshments in the Globe Café featuring jazz performed by HCC’s jazz artists in residence, “After Hours.”

Of Ebony Embers: Vignettes of the Harlem Renaissance

A chamber music theatre work conceived and performed by The Core Ensemble for actor and trio (cello, piano and percussion). The work celebrates the lives of the great African-American poets, Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, and Claude McKay, as seen through the eyes of the great muralist and painter Aaron Douglas. Text is by Akin Babatunde. The musical score includes works by jazz giants Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, Billy Strayhorn, Thelonius Monk and Charles Mingus as well as concert music by Jeffrey Mumford and George Walker.
