Fall flowers will be on sale as well as Kettle Corn. There will be a magician doing a magic show and a puppet show. There is a hay ride, a petting zoo and vendors. A “pop-up” discussion and book signing featuring WBAL-TV’s Tim Tooten and his new book, “Leading By Example: A Parental Guide to Teaching and Modeling Christian Faith at Home,” will take place Monday, September 25, at 6 p.m. at the Abingdon Library, 2510 Tollgate Road in Abingdon.

In addition to being an Emmy-Award winning broadcaster, Rev. Dr. Timothy L. Tooten is pastor and founder of Harvest Christian Ministries in Overlea. His book is a Christian parenting guide that encourages parents and educators to model their faith to their children.

The book teaches parents about the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual development of their children. It also provides guidance to parents on how to talk to their children about faith and trains parents to share their testimony at home. The book also provides guidance to parents on how to pray with their children.

Tooten holds a Doctor of Ministry from Virginia University of Lynchburg, a Master of Theology from Saint Mary’s Ecumenical Institute and a Bachelor of Science from Florida State University.

At the Abingdon Library, Tooten will discuss his book and provide an opportunity for book purchase ($20 each) and signing.

This event is free and open to the public. Advance registration is suggested and may be made online at hcplonline.org.

These fascinating crustaceans are one of the Bay’s most recognizable organisms. Dr. Kathy Baker-Brosch joins us from the Anita C. Leight Estuary Center, where she is a research naturalist and scientific educator. Under Kathy’s guidance, we will be examining the basic organ structures of the crab, and studying the remarkable characteristics which enable these creatures to survive in the brackish waters of the Chesapeake. There is a $5 per person fee for this program. All proceeds from our educational programming benefit the Environmental Center.

Far Apart, Close in Heart: The Impact of Incarceration on Children

Becky Birtha, the author of “Far Apart, Close in Heart: Being a Family When a Loved One is Incarcerated,” will speak about her book Wednesday, September 27, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Abingdon Library, 2510 Tollgate Road in Abingdon.

Birtha will discuss how and why she wrote the book, the effects of parental incarceration on children and what some people are doing about it. The program is for adults, and children are welcome to attend and participate in a craft activity.

A resource fair will be available to attendees and will feature Inner County Outreach, Project SEEK and Harford Community Action Agency.

Birtha has worked with children for many years including teaching in Head Start programs and in preschool and school-age classrooms. Birtha has also worked in the adoption field, finding permanent families for children in foster care. She holds a bachelor’s degree in children’s studies from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a Master of Fine Arts in writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Her work has earned fellowships from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Pew Foundation. Her previous children’s picture books are “Grandmama’s Pride,” which received a Golden Kite Honor, and “Lucky Beans,” recipient of the Arkansas Diamond Primary Award.

The September 27 event is sponsored by Harford County Public Library, Harford County Local Management Board and Governor’s Office for Children.

The discussion is open to the public and free of charge. Registration is recommended by visiting hcplonline.org.
